Your new iPhone is definitely a powerful machine. However, there is a good chance that you are not using it to the fullest extent of its capabilities. Using these tips and tricks should maximize the use of your phone’s potential.
In fact, not only will you get your iPhone to work better on average, but you will get to customize the way you use your iPhone in ways you never thought possible.
Setting up Face ID
The newest models of Apple’s iPhone no longer have the Home button. Unfortunately, that means that they have also done away with the fingerprint scanner that was there. Sure, if you have an older model, you can still use yours, but from now on, the fastest and the easiest way to unlock your brand new iPhone is through the use of Face ID.
To set it up, you should simply go to Settings and then tap on the “Face ID & Passcode”. In order to continue, you will have to set up your password first. Also, if you already have your passcode set up, you will have to enter it to go on. Once you get in, you should tap on the “Set up Face ID”.
We would definitely recommend finding a room that has really good lighting. The phone will ask you to scan your face two times in order to save your Face ID. From that point on, unlocking your phone will be as simple as swiping up. For you, it won’t even feel like the phone was locked. But, unlocking it will be impossible for others.
And, if you worry about putting on makeup before unlocking your phone, you really shouldn’t. If you go online, you can find hundreds of videos of people trying to trick the Face ID. They put on regular makeup, wigs, and glasses, and even go above and beyond to completely alter their looks with cosmetics. None of that works.
Using Apple Pay
If you think paying with your credit cards is convenient, you will love using Apple Pay. Once you set it up, you won’t need to carry your wallet or credit card with you ever again. Using Apple Pay is fast and incredibly gratifying. All you need to do is to press the lock button on the right side of your iPhone twice and let your Face ID scan your face to secure the purchase. However, bear in mind that, if you don’t set up Face ID (and we recommend that you do), you will have to enter your passcode.
But how do you set up Apple Pay? Well, as it turns out, it is very simple. All you need to do is add a valid card to your wallet. Once again, you will go to the Settings menu of your phone and find the corresponding option. This time, it is called “Walley & Apple Pay”. In that menu, you will tap on “add Card”. The phone will take you through the rest of the process. You should bear in mind that there is a chance that you will have to call your bank to verify the card.
Customize Vibration Settings for Different Callers
Most people enjoy setting up ringtones for the special people in their lives. It makes them feel good, and more importantly, it is very convenient. Sometimes you simply need to know who is calling you before you rush to your phone. After all, not every call is equally important.
However, a big part of the adult life is knowing when to turn your ringtone off. Our phones spend a lot of time in silent mode. In those situations, you usually don’t want to pick up the phone even if someone is calling. Unless, of course, the call is very important. Furthermore, since it is considered rude to pull your phone out in certain social environments, knowing who is calling you by the way your phone is vibrating can be really useful.
You can set up a quick succession of vibrations for contacts that you find to be more important, and you can set up mild, almost unnoticeable vibrations for the people you don’t actually want to hear from and prefer contacting through texts.
To do so, you will have to open your contact list and find the contact you want to customize. Open the menu and choose “Edit Contact”. The vibration setting is under the “Ringtone” option. You will then be able to set up your vibration pattern by tapping the screen. But remember, not all iPhones have the same options.
Use Airplane Mode to Charge Your iPhone Quickly
If you are living on the run, you probably don’t have enough time to charge your phone. Most of the time, you simply have 10 to 15 minutes to leave your phone charging before you have to go. And, in those cases, you want it to charge as fast as it possibly can. But, the charge time can be negatively affected by all of the processes that are using your battery up.
For starters, you should definitely disable all unnecessary processes that are running in the background. Once you have done that, you might also want to switch to Airplane Mode. After all, the phone function of your iPhone actually needs a lot of power to work. The phone is trying to connect to phone carriers and any WiFi routers near it. In fact, Research has shown that using Airplane Mode will speed up your charging time by up to 30%.
Start Using Gestures for Common Tasks
Now that the Home button is gone on newer models, you might want to experiment with other options. One of those options is the gesture feature of modern iPhones. For example, Apple users already know that swiping up from the bottom of the screen allows you to switch between apps. Furthermore, it allows you to close any apps that are still working.
But, that is not the only common gesture you can use to make your day easier. You can also swipe down from the upper part of the screen. That gesture will open your notification center. So, if you have any emails or social media notifications you want to go through, you can do so without tediously opening every individual app. Also, if you want to open your control panel, all you need to do is swipe down on the right side of your phone.
There are two more gestures we want to mention. The first one is a simple tap on the screen that will make your phone wake up. It is active by default, but you can actually disable it if you dislike the feature. Another way you can wake your iPhone is by picking it up. Something as simple as lifting your phone can wake it up.
Every iPhone comes with a digital assistant. This digital assistant responds to the name “Siri”, and it can help you do anything you want through voice commands. You can send messages to your contacts, add appointments and schedule meetings by merely talking to your phone.
Furthermore, Siri will learn about your personal preferences in order to customize your experience. After a while, Siri will start recommending shortcuts you might find interesting. And, all you need to do to activate Siri is to say “Hey, Siri” to your phone. If you don’t have that option activated, simply go to “Settings” and tap on “Siri & Search”. That will lead you to a screen that will take you through the process of setting up “Hey, Siri”. Alternatively, if you believe there is too much noise, you can access Siri by holding the lock button.
Some of the usual commands people use Siri for include setting up wake up calls, scheduling, and calling people from their contacts list.
Learn How to Use 3D Touch
One of the features that require a bit of practice is using the 3D Touch. It is available on iPhone 6s and any iPhones that got released after the 6s. This feature allows you to use different degrees of pressure to make your touchscreen react differently. That, in turn, allows you to use a number of quick actions that wouldn’t otherwise be available.
For example, if you are typing a new message, a stronger push on the screen will activate a moveable cursor you can use. If you are trying to delete notifications from your screen, you can press harder to delete all of them at once.
Moreover, if you press and hold the icon of an app that supports 3D touch, the Quick Action menu will appear. With that menu, you will be able to interact with your apps without opening them. For example, if you are using Twitter, you will be able to use the search function on your feed, add a new tweet or send a message to someone. Moreover, apps like Instagram will allow you to create new posts by taking pictures or view your activity log. If we were to go into detail about all the ways you can use the 3D Touch functionality, this guide would be incredibly long. So, we will leave the experimentation to you.
